Sideline Swing started way back in 1994, as The Sideline Swing Orchestra. The band got its name from playing its first gig on the sidelines of a rugby match.
The roots of the group went back even further than the rugby, originally performing together as the “Down Under Rooftop Orchestra” at a Cotton Club tribute event at the Civic on Manchester Street. When that event was over, many members wanted to carry on, so Butch Green took what was left, gathered some old and new members, and changed the name.
Three decades later, Sideline Swing is still going strong, and still under Butch’s musical direction.
